After more than two years of technical development and continuous refinement, I can now proudly present the first chess set of Studio Taboto:
ADAM

The set consists of a total of 34 cast chess pieces in a storage box with chess board. In addition to the core set, each set contains an additional queen of each color, ready for pawn conversions.
The pieces are made of genuine ancient bronze (88% copper, 12% tin), investment cast using the lost form process. The texture is smooth with some textured elements. For a perfect silky gloss finish, the pieces are blasted several times, lastly with glass beads (100-200 µm). The pieces are coated with an almost invisible, resistant protective varnish that preserves the shine and patination over many years and thousands of touches.
The figures’ center of gravity is low, the figures can be tilted over 45° and return safely to their place without changing their position.
Each piece has its own unmistakable melodic bell-like sound, which rings for approx. 1 second when struck. Pieces can be struck to great effect, while being completely silent when moved normally. The pieces are fitted with a base made of real sheep leather, which gives them a pleasantly high static friction on the board with a defined transition to sliding friction. This means that the pieces can be placed in a controlled manner without “swimming” or wandering, and provide optimum haptic feedback both when pushing and when lifting and setting down.

In this version, the chessboard is made entirely of European oak (natural and smoked). The use of wood fillers and synthetic resins has been deliberately avoided. A coating of hard wax oil protects and preserves the natural wood color and texture.
The chessboard is borderless with a minimalistic design. It has a grid size of 50×50 mm, and therefore overall dimensions of 40×40 cm.
Due to their hollow design with a wall thickness of approx. 1.5 mm, these pieces have a familiar weight, similar to the Staunton pieces used in professional tournament chess (double weighted). The heights and base sizes of the pieces are also based on these. Only the pawn has a slightly larger base than is usual with Staunton, this deliberately due to personal preference.
The pieces are suitable for tournament chess in every respect and, unlike many other metal chess pieces on the market, are explicitly designed for intensive play.
Piece | Dimensions | Weight |
Pawn | Ø32 mm x 52 mm | 47 g |
Queen | Ø40 mm x 80 mm | 112 g |
King | Ø40 mm x 90 mm | 110 g |
Bishop | Ø36 mm x 74 mm | 64 g |
Knight | Ø36 mm x 69 mm | 90 g |
Rook | Ø36 mm x 64 mm | 75 g |

The storage box contains a velvety coated foam insert that keeps the pieces safe even during bumpy transportation. The box can be used in several ways. If the chessboard is used directly on top, as in its function as a lid, it appears to float and only requires very little table surface. The box can also be leaned upright against a wall on one side or hung vertically on a wall on any nail or screw head to display the pieces perfectly. The pieces are held securely in the foam insert.
